A major 6.2 earthquake hit near the north coast of New Guinea, Papua New Guinea on Sunday, August 19, 2012, at 08:41:50 UTC, at a depth of 77.3 km (48 mi).  Three major (>6.2) earthquakes have hit in the last five days and the frequency of major quakes continues to climb exponentially throughout the world.
