Headlines on Thursday reported the jobless rate was at a 42-year low, pointing to continued improvement in the labor market, reported marketwatch.com.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), not one member of 20 percent of American families worked in 2013.

The statistics began a marked increase in 2009 and have remained higher than at any time in recorded history. Let's see now, what changed in 2009?
