Fishermen discovered stranded pilot whales in the sands along southern Chile's Straight of Magellan. About 45 whales beached themselves and authorities have no clue yet as to why they stranded.

A new virus is causing lambs to be born with deformities so severe that they die within seconds after birth. The Shmallenberg virus was identified in Germany in November and there have been cases reported in Belgium, France and the Netherlands. More than a ton of dead fish have been found floating at Canal dos Patos, Macau since January 19. This is only the latest case of dead fish found in the channel, which have caused concerns about pollution. Water and fish are being tested by the Environmental Protection Bureau.

99 Whales Beach Themselves in New Zealand

Ninety-nine long-finned pilot whales beached themselves on South Island, New Zealand on Monday. Wildlife protection officials shot 33 whales that could not be saved. Volunteers were able to guide them back to sea on Wednesday, but they turned around and beached themselves again the following day and had to be put down. Thirty-six whales died naturally and 17 were successfully refloated and 13 are unaccounted for.
